Best Party Games You Can Play With One Phone
You are at a party, a family dinner or a cabin weekend. There is no board game in sight, but there are phones. Good news: one phone is enough for a great game night.
Below are the pass-the-phone games we come back to most, what each one needs, and which group they suit. Some are ours, some are classics that need nothing but a timer or a word list.
What makes a good one-phone game?
- Secrets stay secret. When the phone goes around, each player should see only their own card. A good app hides the screen until you hold it, and hides it again when you let go.
- Short turns. Nobody wants to wait two minutes for the phone. Each player's turn with the phone should take seconds.
- Talking happens off the screen. The best party games use the phone to set things up, then let people look at each other.
- No sign-up. If the first five minutes go to downloads and accounts, the moment is gone.
1. Impostor (3+ players)
Everyone gets the same secret word, except one player: the impostor. Each player says a clue, then you vote on who is faking. It takes a minute to explain and works for kids, grandparents and competitive friends alike.
On one phone, each player holds a "door" to peek at their card, then passes the phone on. In our Impostor game you can also play Undercover, where the impostor gets a similar word (tea instead of coffee, say) and doesn't even know they are the impostor. Best for: 4 to 10 people who like to talk.
2. Mafia (5–16 players)
The classic social deduction game. The Mafia secretly pick a victim each night; the town tries to find them by day. The traditional problem is the narrator, who runs the game and doesn't play. With an app as the narrator, the phone goes round at night and every player makes a secret move on an identical-looking screen, so nobody can tell the Doctor from a Citizen.
Play Mafia here, or read how to play Mafia without a narrator. Best for: bigger groups, 7 or more, with 30 minutes to spare.
3. Blind Timer and Timer bomb (1–4 players)
Start a stopwatch and stop it at exactly 10.00 seconds, without seeing it. It sounds easy. It is not. In Blind Timer up to four people can play at once on a split screen, or take turns.
Timer bomb is the hot-potato version: pass the phone, start and stop the clock on your turn, and hope the hidden fuse doesn't run out in your hands. Best for: quick rounds while the food cooks, or deciding who does the dishes.
4. Charades and forehead guessing
Hold the phone on your forehead showing a word, and your friends act it out or describe it while you guess. Apps such as Heads Up! do this well, but a list of words and a phone timer works too. Best for: loud, silly groups and mixed ages.
5. Categories (any size)
Pick a letter and a list of categories ("a fruit", "a city", "a band"). Set a phone timer for a minute and write an answer for each one. Score a point for every answer nobody else wrote. You only need paper and the phone's clock. Best for: word lovers and a calmer table.
6. Would you rather / Hot takes
Read a question from the phone, everyone answers at once on the count of three, then defend your choice. Lists are everywhere online. It isn't really a game with a winner, but it's a great warm-up for a group that doesn't know each other yet.
How to choose
| Group | Try |
|---|---|
| 2 people | Blind Timer, Categories |
| 3–5 people | Impostor, Timer bomb, charades |
| 6–10 people | Impostor with 2 impostors, Mafia |
| 10+ people | Mafia, charades in teams |
| Kids at the table | Impostor with strong hints, Blind Timer, charades |
Tips for passing the phone
- Turn the brightness up and the auto-lock off (or use a game that keeps the screen awake).
- Pass the phone face down. It sounds dramatic, but it stops accidental peeks.
- Add the games to your home screen. They open full screen and still work if the Wi-Fi is bad.
- Keep the phone in the middle of the table during discussion, so everyone looks at each other, not the screen.
When everyone has their own phone
Some games are better when each player has a screen. Sketch needs one phone each, because the drawer's word must stay secret. Impostor and Mafia can also run "each on own phone": everyone joins a room with a code, and nobody has to pass anything around. That's also how you play with friends on a video call.
Whatever you pick, the best party game is the one that gets everyone laughing in the first two minutes. Pick a game and start.
